Our Bed and Breakfast is located in beautiful Lothian, Maryland.  There are many day trips you can take to our surrounding local area.  Perhaps you are interested in canoeing on the Patuxent River, fossil hunting, playing a relaxing round of golf, or interested in a tasting local fare.  If you're looking for some unique local experiences, we suggest the following:

Nearby Calvert Cliffs State Park is a day-use park featuring a sandy beach, unique fossils, playground, a freshwater and tidal marshland and 13 miles of hiking trails located in Calvert County. The massive cliffs from which Calvert Cliffs SP was named dominates the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay for thirty miles in Calvert County and were formed over 15 million years ago when all of Southern Maryland was covered by a warm, shallow sea. When the sea receded 20-25 million years ago, marking the end of the Miocene period, cliffs were exposed and began eroding. Today these cliffs reveal the remains of prehistoric species Including sharks, whales, rays, and seabirds that were the size of small airplanes. 

For hundreds of years the forces of nature have reshaped the Chesapeake Bay shoreline of Flag Ponds Nature Park, creating a remarkable variety of natural environments--from sandy beach, to freshwater ponds, to the forested heights of Calvert Cliffs. Today, nature continues to play with the sand, changing the park's landscape with each tide, each storm, each season.

Millions of years ago, sharks, whales, crocodiles and other creatures inhabited the waters and shores of this area. Most of these animals are now extinct, others are just no longer found here. To the sharp-eyed visitor, sharks teeth and other Miocene fossils may be found along the park's shoreline.

A short, half-mile hike brings you to the sandy beach or you may take longer trail routes that allow you to experience the beauty of the park. Additionally there are observation platforms at two ponds, a fishing pier on the Chesapeake Bay and a visitor's center with wildlife displays.

These two website directories include lists of fishing charter boats and head boats operating in the Chesapeake Bay area. There are lots of charter captains out there who can take you out for a fun and productive day of fishing on the Bay. 

When you visit the website, the closest charters are in Deale or Galesville (approximately 7 - 10 minutes away from Butterfly Fields).

Conveniently located in Chesapeake Beach, this local  restaurant features live Jazz most Saturdays and a seasonal menu.

The Old Stein Inn

Located in Edgewater, this family owned German restaurant features indoor and outdoor dining, live music, and authentic German cuisine served in a cozy setting.   Their Bierstube “Pub” offers up a hefty selection of ten drafts and 30 bottled beers, all of which are excellent.

The Killarney House, in Davidsonville Maryland, features Irish food using fresh, local ingredients and made from family recipes.

Jug Bay Wetland Sanctuary

Lothian is home to Jug Bay Wetland Sanctuary!  

Established in 1985, the Sanctuary consists of 1,600 acres of tidal freshwater wetlands, forests, meadows, and fields along the Patuxent River and includes one of the largest freshwater tidal wetlands on the East Coast. The Sanctuary is managed so visitors can enjoy, appreciate, and learn about the peaceful, quiet environment and the expansive wetlands. The wetlands contain large diverse stands of aquatic plants, which are home to many bird, fish, reptile, and mammal species.  To recognize the large and diverse bird population at Jug Bay, they have been designated as a nationally important bird area by the National Audubon Society.

Prince George's Co. Parks

and Recreation: Patuxent River Park

Much of the land in the park contains valuable natural and historical resources and is governed by a "limited-use" policy. The park offers a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities including camping, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, boating, kayaking, canoeing, archaeology and nature study. In addition, there is the Patuxent Rural Life Museums, a collection of late 19th century and early 20th century buildings and historic structures dedicated to preserving the rural heritage of southern Prince George's County. The park provides canoe and kayak rentals, facilities for camping and picnics, guided educational programs, and special programs and eventsfor people of all ages. Reservations are required for most activities.
